Unum honors ‘Starting 6’ teachers at Pirates hockey game tonight

Glenburn -

PORTLAND — Six teachers from across the state will be inducted into the Unum Educators’ “Starting 6” Hall of Fame during tonight’s Portland Pirates hockey game. Three school administrators will also be honored.

During the first intermission of the game against the Worcester Sharks at the Cumberland County Civic Center, the teachers and administrators will walk onto the ice and receive honors for their dedication to helping students succeed. The game begins at 7 p.m.

“Supporting public education is a key initiative at Unum,” said Chris Jerome, a senior vice president at Unum. “We’re excited to highlight educators who are making significant contributions in our classrooms across Maine.”

For the past six years, Unum has partnered with the Maine Coalition for Excellence in Education and the Portland Pirates to recognize more than 100 public school educators who create innovative lessons and engage parents, families and others to ensure their students succeed. Teachers are nominated by principals, other teachers, parents and students, and winners are selected by Unum and the other sponsors. Administrators are nominated and chosen by state education officials.

During the ceremony, the teachers and administrators will each be given a personalized Portland Pirates jersey and a check for $500 for their own personal use, as well as a copy of their “team” photo. Each honoree will also have prime seating for themselves and their families at tonight’s game.

“Outstanding education begins with outstanding educators,” said Dolly Sullivan, director of the Maine Coalition for Excellence in Education. “These individuals have proven their commitment to the youth of Maine, using their love of teaching to give their pupils a passion for learning that will last a lifetime.”
