2011 SCARE ME 5K ROAD RACE

ROCKLAND -

ROCKLAND, Maine — “Scare ME 5K Road Race” announced for Rockland, Maine on Saturday, Oct. 29.

On-line registration is available: www.runsignup.com/Race/ME/Rockland/2011ScareMe5K or www.active.com/5k-race/rockland-me/scare-me-5k-2011-rr769

Be a part of the 3rd annual Scare Me 5K Road Race.

A late season road race, the Scare Me 5K course is a beautiful run on a fast course with a few rolling hills with a finish that hugs the Rockland Harbor coastline.

Starting and finishing at Almalfi on the Water this event will occur on Saturday, October 29th, 2011 with walkers and runners of all abilities invited to participate or ‘opt-out’ in this unique and fun event. A great way to welcome in the Halloween weekend!

Race registration will take place beginning at 9:00am at Almalfi on the Water, 12 Water Street, right off downtown Rockland’s Main Street. The 5K starts at 10:10am.

Of course, a best costume award will be one of the highlights to the day; come dressed to the nines! Well-behaved dogs are also welcomed to participate in their own special “best dressed” category.

Walkers, strollers, dogs welcomed.

Local runners from Team GO-MALAWI will host this race; it is a fundraiser will all net proceeds benefiting orphaned children from Chigamba Village and the Ntchisi Community. Last year Team GO-MALAWI runners raised $40,000 to build an outreach center that provides assistance to over 100 orphans. Executive Director Janet Littlefield, a mid-coast native and the daughter of Doc and Sally Littlefield, has devoted her life to helping orphaned children for much of the past decade and this year her organization will send over 50 children to private high schools and one to college as we help provide these forgotten orphans with a hand-up and a chance for a productive life.

There is a lot to like about this race; our aim is to make it special and you’ll want to be part of what is becoming an annual tradition.

Our start time of 10:10am will help with the weather not being too cold and when you’re done, perhaps you’ll be ready for some hearty soup, and some energy fruit and foods.

This is our fifth and final mid-coast race of the year and is part of our five-part racing series.

Our “Set the Pace 5K” was hosted by Smoke Stack Grill in Camden on January 1st and began the year with a bang as over 100 runners finished! A great accomplishment, for a great cause.

Our “LUV ME 5K” was hosted by the YMCA in Rockport on February 14th and saw many single runners and couples hit the roads of Rockport to help promote love on the other side of the world.

The “Leprechaun LUCKY 5K” on March 17th was hosted by Almalfi Restaurant in Rockland and all the walkers and runners who participated seemed to have a good time.

The 31st annual “Peter Ott’s 10K” attracted about 100 runners in June who tested themselves on the rolling hills of Camden.

For non-runners/walkers we offer the greatest perk of all; the “opt-out” runners special; this is where you’ll get a race number for the raffle but you don’t have to run. You can pick a proxy runner and you’ll be listed right below your proxy runner with their time – a real chance to get a PR.!

The race will feature a suggested donation of $15 for pre-registered runners, $18 on race day. In addition, couples can pre-register together for $25, $30 on race day, families of 3 for $35 pre-registration, $40 race day ($10 each for additional family members); The first 75 pre-registered runners and walkers will receive a clothing item and a souvenir (collectible) from the Scare Me 5K.

All checks are tax deductible and should be made payable to: Go-Malawi.

More information about “GO-MALAWI” is available on-line at: www.go-malawi.org.

We’re still thinking and hatching up ideas and fun; this is the time to get yourself out on the road again and test yourself to see where you and your fitness are.

Make sure you put 10:10, Saturday, October 29th, 2011 on your calendar and register today.

NOTE: We’re still accepting runners into our “Go-Malawi” Marathon and ½ Marathon Program. Our first race, The Death Valley Marathon was a huge success as seven runners ran the muddy course and came home to tell about (with pictures as proof). We got out of town just as they were closing the roads for flooding! What an adventure. We had three first time marathoners and they all made it with flying colors. We followed that with 14 runners in New Orleans in 2009 including a 62 year old first-timer and last year 18 of us went to race in the Country Music Marathon in Nashville. Want to join “Team GO-MALAWI”? Our next destination race is in the Spring of 2012. We hope to have a table set up at the “Scare Me 5K” with more info about joining Team GO-MALAWI. It is great to have a team to train with, a mentor assigned that will console you when you need it, and push you to do your best. We “run with a purpose, for a purpose”. You can look on-line at www.go-malawi.org for information about the work we do and the marathon program. Further information, you can contact Reade Brower at: reade@freepressonline.com.
