WINTHROP -  The Maine Junior Classical League  annual Fall convention from 3:30- 9 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19 at Winthrop High School.  Over 400 Latin students from 15 high schools across Maine will be attending the convention.
At the convention students will compete against each other in tests covering various classical subjects: mythology, Roman history, reading comprehension, Latin derivatives, vocabulary, and Latin grammar. Teams from each school will also compete in a trivia game called certamen, which covers a diverse range of classical topics. The highlight of the evening is the spirit contest which will take place at 6:45, where students enthusiastically cheer for their love of JCL and Latin. Last year, 417 students attended the convention at Sacopee Valley High School. At this convention Camden Hills just beat out Hampden Academy for first place in academics, but, in a heated contest, Hampden’s Advanced Latin certamen team took 1st place. Four of the top five individual sweeps winners in academics will be coming back this year to battle for the coveted individual 1st place trophy. The National Junior Classical League 2nd Vice President Zach Hall from Massachusetts will be coming to promote the activities that the National Junior Classical League has to offer. Zach will also be talking about the National Junior Classical League Convention, which will be held in Kentucky next summer.
