National Park Week kicks off in Acadia National Park

BAR HARBOR – National Park Week will be observed in national park areas throughout the country from April 16 through April 24. The theme this year is “Healthy Parks, Healthy People,” which focuses on the growing connection between public lands and public health.

Also during National Park Week, the Schoodic Education and Research Center (SERC) at the Schoodic section of Acadia National Park will be offering two programs for children. Join a ranger from 1:30-3 p.m. Tuesday, April 19 for Geology for Kids. On April 21, come learn how beavers adapt to their environment. Meet the ranger at 1:30 p.m. for a 1 ½ hour program.
On April 22, join Acadia National Park staff and the SERC Institute for a discussion regarding Earth Day and the impact of the environmental movement beginning at 9:30 a.m. All of the Schoodic programs meet at the Moore Auditorium on the SERC campus.

Acadia’s Park Loop Road and Hulls Cove Visitor Center are scheduled to re-open on April 15, 2011. The visitor center will be open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily, and will feature an audiovisual orientation program every half hour. Educational material, including books and maps, may be purchased at the Eastern National bookstore. There is an accessible entrance at the back of the building. Follow the signs and go straight when you enter from Route 3.

National Junior Ranger Day will be held on Saturday, April 30. Children ages 5-12 (accompanied by an adult) may join rangers and volunteers for a variety of outdoor nature activities around the Sieur de Monts Spring area, accessible from Route 3 outside Bar Harbor, from 1-4 p.m. For more information, call 288-1312.

Also on April 30, Friends of Acadia’s 11th annual Earth Day Roadside Cleanup will be held, from 8:30-11:30 a.m. Bring your family, friends, or a team from your office and help clean up over 100 miles of roadside in the MDI, Trenton, Ellsworth, and Schoodic areas.
