FARMINGTON, Maine — A âYes on 1â rally in Farmington, to support restoring Election Day Registration, will feature a talk by former Maine Secretary of State Matt Dunlap. The public is invited to join any or all of the rally events, on Saturday, Nov. 5, at 11:00 at the Park ânâ Ride, at 11:30 at Meetinghouse Park, or at noon at Wicked Gelato.
The âYes on 1â rally events begin at 11 a.m. at the Farmington Park ânâ Ride next to Rite Aid, near the bridge at the junction of Rts. 2/4/27. The group will walk to Meetinghouse Park, downtown. After brief remarks at the park, at 11:30, by local âYes on 1â supporters, the group will walk two blocks around downtown.
At noon, the rally will culminate at Wicked Gelato cafĂ©, 161 Main St. Dunlap will speak on âElection Day Registration: Why Does It Matter?â Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions following Dunlapâs talk.
During Dunlapâs service as Maine Secretary of State from 2005 to 2011, he was instrumental in increasing Maineâs voter turnout. Furthermore, he gained recognition for the fair and non-partisan manner in which he conducted the work of all aspects of the office on behalf of the public.
Prior to his time as Secretary of State, Dunlap served four terms in the Maine House of Representatives, representing Old Town. He chaired the Joint Standing Committees on Inland Fisheries and Wildlife and Government Oversight and was on the House Standing Committee on Elections.
For the election on Tuesday, November 8, Election Day Registration is Question 1 on the ballot. A âyesâ vote would restore Election Day Registration, which Maine had for 38 years, until the Legislature repealed the law last spring.
