AUGUSTA – John and Beth Hodgkins of Yarmouth, owners of Jackson Mountain Farm in Temple, won Best of Show in the 2011 Maine Maple Producers Association‚Äôs syrup contest at the January Agricultural Trade Show in Augusta. The annual contest measures density, color, clarity, and taste of pure maple syrup produced in Maine in four categories. The Hodgkinses won Best of Show with a medium amber entry. Other category winners included: Martin and Jean-Pierre Lariviere, T6 R19, light amber; Martin and Jean-Pierre Lariviere, dark amber; and Ethan and Emily Robertson, Canaan, extra dark amber.
The Maine Maple Producers Association, which promotes the widespread use of Maine maple products, represents roughly 140 syrup-producing members throughout Maine. Hodgkins, who started Jackson Mountain Farm with two cousins in 1963, has produced pure maple syrup in Temple for 47 years. Beth Hodgkins is the author of the official Maine maple syrup cookbook, Maine Maple Beyond Pancakes, published by the Association in 2007.
