World Habitat Day activities announced

Belfast -

WALDO – Habitat for Humanity of Waldo County is joining the celebration of World Habitat Day 2010 with a number of special events planned for the next six weeks. These activities include:
• A call for more volunteers to help us finish our first home. The walls are up and the roof should be on by Monday, Oct. 4, which is World Habitat Day 2010, but there is still lots to do. If you want to help, call our office at 338-2344 and leave a message or email us at volunteer@habitatofwaldocounty.org. There are also opportunities for groups from businesses, clubs and religious organizations to volunteer together. If Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter can help to build Habitat homes in their mid-80s, so can you.
• We are holding a community-wide birdhouse decorating competition. We are inviting pre-schools, elementary, middle school, high school, college and senior college students to participate, along with businesses, clubs and anyone else who wants to be involved. We have the birdhouse kits. Call 338-2344 or email: contact@habitatofwaldocounty.org and we’ll get a kit to you to put together or if you need it put together first, let us know. The birdhouses will be sold at a silent auction to be held from 4:30-7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10 at the Hutchinson Center in Belfast.
• We will host “Taste of the World” 5:30-8 p.m. Nov. 10 at the Hutchinson Center. In addition to selling the birdhouses at a silent auction, there will be cuisine available from around the world; a cash bar; and live instrumental music. Tickets are $15 each or two for $25 and will be available at a number of locations in the area. For more information, contact Andrea Walker at 557-6071. Come taste the flavors of the world while helping to build houses and hope.
• At the “Taste of the World” event, we will have cards available for those who would like to donate to Habitat for Humanity of Waldo County in the name of someone as a holiday gift. If you would like more information about this, call 557-6071 or visit our website: www.habitatofwaldocounty.org.
