ORONO – The UM Student Women’s Association will partner with Students for a Safe Campus to host the Bangor area’s 26th annual Take Back the Night rally, speak-out and march. The event will take place at 5:30 p.m.¬† Tuesday, Oct. 5 behind Fogler Library on the University of Maine campus.
Take Back the Night is an organization committed to the end of sexual violence. Survivor speak-outs and rallies have been occurring globally since the 1970s and in the Bangor area for 26 years. The UM women’s acapella group, Rennaissance, will begin the event, followed by words from representatives of Rape Response Services, Spruce Run and Mabel Wadsworth Women’s Health Center. A survivor speak-out will end the rally, in which survivors of sexual violence and rape will be invited to share their stories and experiences in a safe and accepting environment. After the survivor speak-out community members, faculty and students will join together to march the campus and stand up against the sexual violence that statistically 1 in 4 Mainers experience every year.
