DEER ISLE – Headlining the August show at the Turtle Gallery will be Karl Schrag (lithographs), Mary Aro (portraits), Timur Akriev (oils), Robin Cust (Jewelry), Galen Davis (pastels) and Barbara Putnam (prints). The show begins with an Opening Reception at 2pm on Sunday, August 1st. A Gallery Talk with Artists will be held at 4pm on Sunday, August 8th.
In keeping with its regional focus, the Deer Isle’s Turtle Gallery highlights those artists with a Maine connection. Currently, Timur Akhriev spends his summers painting in Maine, Galen Davis lives in Brooksville and Isle au Haut, Robin Cust resides in Stonington, Barbara Putnam dwells in Deer Isle and Massachusetts, and Mary Aro divides her year between Sargentville and Michigan.
To quote the New York Times: ‚ÄúMaine has brightened many an artist’s day, but for at least one painter, it also lighted up the nights.‚ÄĚ The German-born Karl Schrag (1912-95) summered on Deer Isle for more than 40 years and viewed night there as a prime subject, “a kind of fantastic day when everything becomes possible.” The lithographs in the exhibit span his career and many have not been in the public eye in decades. Some pieces stem from his earliest years, the latter work speaks the language of this region as the Penobscot Bay area became the raw material for his art.
A catalog of Mary Aro portraits is available at the gallery. Open since 1982, the Turtle Gallery encompasses an 1876 two-story barn, the adjacent Centennial House Gallery and the outdoor Sculpture Court.  Gallery hours are Monday through Saturday 10 Р5:30 and Sunday 2 to 6. The facility is located on Route 15 just north of the Deer Isle village center. For more information, please call 348-9977, or visit www.turtlegallery.com.
