CORINTH – The Eastern Maine CA$H Coalition and AARP Tax-Aide program are again offering no-cost federal and state of Maine income tax preparation and no-cost electronic filing in locations throughout the state. With electronic filing and direct deposit, refunds can be received in as few as eight days.
This year, Safe Harbor Community Center in Corinth will be the site of a one-day income tax preparation event. IRS certified volunteer tax preparers will be on hand from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12 to provide assistance in completing both federal and Maine state tax returns.
The AARP Tax-Aide program is the nation’s largest volunteer-run tax program and is now in its 42nd year of operation. Although affiliated with the AARP Foundation, this no-cost tax service is available for low to moderate income taxpayers of all ages, with special attention given to those 60 and over.
Volunteers preparing tax returns are designated by the IRS as certified volunteer tax preparers. The training and testing these volunteers receive each year enables them to complete all but the most complex individual tax returns.
When coming to a tax preparation site, taxpayers should bring a copy of their 2009 federal and state of Maine tax returns, driver’s license or other form of picture ID, Social Security cards for themselves and anyone who will be claimed as a dependent, and all tax documents received for 2010 such as Forms W-2, 1099, and 1098. Also, if itemizing deductions, bring cancelled checks or receipts for medical and educational expenses, tax and interest payments, and charitable contributions.
