The first portion of the program will feature Marla Rogers of Owls Head, who will speak about her early years growing up at lighthouses. Daughter of former keeper Archford V. Haskins, her father’s career included appointments as keeper at Boston Head Light, Great Point Light and Sankety Head Lights in Nantucket, and Owls Head Light. Born while the family was stationed at Great Point Light, Rogers‚Äô presentation will highlight her recollections of growing up at Sankety Head and Owls Head.
The second and final portion of the evening’s program will be the premiere screening of the recently released DVD, Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse: A History. The breakwater and lighthouse has been a fixture of Rockland harbor for over 100 years and yet not many know how it was built or even the reasons why it was built. This documentary answers these questions with beautiful photography and interviews with local historians Ed Coffin and Brian Harden, as well as noted lighthouse historian Ted Panayotoff. The history of the breakwater is traced from the start as a competition between Owls Head and Rockland harbors, to the series of storms that finally caused the funding to make it through Congress. Produced by local filmmaker Craig Mathieson of Owls Head and filmed over a three-year period, this 55-minute documentary also details some of the restoration efforts as well as a tour of the interior of the lighthouse.
The program is free and open to the public. The Vinalhaven Room is accessed via the entrance to the Health Club on the Samoset Resort property. The Friends of Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse, a chapter of the non-profit American Lighthouse Foundation, are stewards of both Rockland Breakwater and Owls Head Lighthouses.
