Shellfish Field Day and Open House Set in Beals

BEALS -  The Downeast Institute will celebrate the construction of its new education facility by hosting a day of ocean-focused fun at its shellfish hatchery on Great Wass Island in Bealsf rom 10am to 3pm on Saturday, August 28th.
The annual event offers great seafood and family-friendly activities designed to showcase the institute’s research and education programs. From lobster boat rides to kiddie clam digs, hands-on activities offer participants the chance to learn about the marine environments that are so important to Downeast coastal communities.
Touch tanks, plankton safaris, arts and crafts, a clam flying contest, facility tours and more will be available to young and old alike. The event also features live music by Danny Beal and the University of Maine at Machias Ukelele Club and seafood prepared by the Church of Jesus Christ, Lamb of God.
The Downeast Institute shellfish hatchery and education facility is located at 39 Wildflower Lane on Great Wass Island in Beals. From US Route 1, take Route 187 to Bridge Street in Jonesport and cross into Beals, then follow the signs and lobster balloons to the Downeast Institute.
