BANGOR â€” The Penobscot Valley Kennel Club breed, obedience and rally obedience match will be held at 8:30 a.m. (registration) Saturday, Sept. 11, rain or shine, near Paul Bunyan at Bass Park, corner of Main and Buck streets.
The American Kennel Club-sanctioned event will include a rally or rally obedience, often referred to as rally-O, will begin at 10 a.m. with judge Melanie Folsom of Holden. Classes include novice A/B, excellent A/B, and advanced A/B. Rally is a course consisting of 10 to 20 stations, each with instructions for an obedience type of task to be performed by the handler-dog team.
The breed show, open to AKC-registered dogs only, begins at 11 a.m. with judges Amanda Ireland of Eddington for herding, sporting, working, miscellaneous, adult handling, best puppy in match; Arthur Malaussena of Sullivan for hound, toy, terrier, non-sporting, junior handling, best in match; Galen Folsom of Holden for best veteran in match and best brace in match. Handlers exhibit their dogs and the judge makes placements based on how close to the breed standard each dog is. Adult handling and junior handling participants are judged based on their abilities to show their dogs to the animalsâ€™ best advantage. Breed classes will be divided by sex. Classes include puppy 3-6 months, puppy 6-9 months, puppy 9-12 months, 12-18 months, bred by exhibitor, open, brace, veterans and miscellaneous.
Ã¤ Obedience classes include utility A/B, open A/B, novice A/B and pre-novice A/B and will begin at 10 a.m., with judge Kathryn Stead of West Bath.
The first entry fee of a dog for breed, obedience, or rally is $6; second entry of the same dog, $4. Junior and adult handling as additional classes are free. Professional handlers may show their own dogs. All dogs must be up to date on their shots. No spayed or neutered dogs in the regular breed classes.
