Positively Maine

Machias -

MACHIAS, Maine –¬† Thank you for this wonderful opportunity to help Literacy Volunteers of Washington County spread the good news about recent developments concerning Dolly Parton‚Äôs Imagination Library program. This international literacy project delivers monthly books to the mailboxes of pre-school children in a chosen designated area. Since 2006 LVWC has been actively seeking and receiving public and private support for this innovative method of bringing literacy to the doorstep of every child under five years old residing in Washington County. There are no financial guidelines or personal information forms to complete, the child must simply live in Washington County and not yet have reached their fifth birthday to be eligible.

And now, thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor through the Maine Community Foundation, LVWC has been awarded a one time grant substantial enough to offer this unique service to every eligible child as well as establishing a significant endowment fund to be used in perpetuity for this vital project. We are overjoyed at the surprising turn of events.

More than 28% of Washington County cannot read beyond the 4th grade level and many of them are currently raising children. Generational low literacy prevents many from striving toward their full potential.

The cost of enrollment in the Imagination Library is just $35.00 per year/per child for this amazing service

Book sales, bake sales, yard sales, monthly public suppers, Scrabble and cribbage tourneys as well as private donations have supplemented the program’s coffers over these fleeting years. These funds, unfortunately, fell below capacity last July to pay the monthly invoices for the books to the Dollywood Foundation, disappointing kids and parents alike. This recent donation awarded through MaineCF will go a long way to restoring both the books and the excitement they bring to Washington County homes. Our hearts are gladdened by the prospect.
