DOVER-FOXCROFT, Maine — Remembering a young artist for her talent is the focus of a poignant exhibit, “An Evening of Joy”, on display at Center Theatre at 20 East Main Street in Dover-Foxcroft through to Aug. 30. Examples of graphic design and art created by artist Joy Olivia Haskins (1975-2010) are juxtaposed with photographs one of her mentors, artist Bruce Towl of Dover-Foxcroft, took of her, along with the life-affirming mandalas Haskins composed. The photos of Haskins reflect the physical toll on her of the impact of various legal, health and emotional challenges she faced. Towl co-created the exhibit with another of Haskins’ mentors, artist Alan Bray of Sangerville. Though debilitating illnesses “prevented her from being able to blossom as fully as that innate ability would have allowed,” explains Towl, it is important to remember “the reflections of Joy” and, quoting author Elizabeth Watson, to remember individuals who have passed away for “their wisest, most compassionate, most creative moments.” The exhibit is available to travel to other locations after Aug. 30.
