PERRY, Maine — On Sunday, Sept. 4, perform works by Bach, Pachelbel, Franck, & Achenbach on the wonderful new-old tracker organ, David Wallace Opus 62, which the church has now been enjoying for nearly two years. A very generous legacy, which was left to the church for the purpose in the wills of Ronald and Ruby Johnson, made it possible for the church’s music committee to contract with David Wallace and Company for the creation of this new organ. Although there are many totally new or expanded parts, it has many elements that are primarily from two older organs and a “box” with a design based on another older organ, but built and finished beautifully by Nick Wallace. It was carefully planned to serve the needs of this unique space and the people that worship here now and into the future, as well as those who will come specifically to enjoy a concert such as this.
Mark De Voto is a composer and writer who taught music history and theory at Reed College, the University of New Hampshire, and Tufts University prior to his retirement from full-time teaching in 2000. He studied organ for two summers in 1954 and 1956 with William Allen Lindahl, Melville Smith, and Frank Taylor. He edited the revised 4th and 5th editions of the classic “Harmony,” a basic textbook by Maine native Walter Piston, who was also his teacher.
Edward French is the editor of Eastport’s bi-monthly “Quoddy Tides,” as well as the well-known organist and music director at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Eastport. A member of the American Guild of Organists, he regularly performs organ concerts in the area. He also leads “pipe organ encounters,” so that young people will gain an understanding of and appreciation for the King of Instruments.
The free concert will begin at 4 p.m. at the Perry Congregational Church, just off Route 1, opposite the New Friendly Restaurant and up the hill on Shore Road. All donations received from this special concert will go directly toward the establishment of an ongoing maintenance fund for the new Wallace tracker organ.
