Opera Preview: Gounod’s Faust

BLUE HILL, Maine — Charles Gounod’s Faust comes to the Grand on Saturday, Dec. 17, by live simulcast from the Metropolitan Opera in New York. To help music lovers prepare for this event, the Bagaduce Music Lending Library and Friends of the Blue Hill Public Library will join together to introduce and study this theatrical journey at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 16, in the Howard Room of the Blue Hill Public Library. Jonas Kaufmann sings the title role in this classic tale reset in the first half of the 20th century by Tony Award-winning director Des McAnuff. RenĂ© Pape stars as the devil, and Marina Poplavskaya as Marguerite.
Local opera enthusiast David Porter will summarize the plot, introduce the music and give some ideas of special ways to enjoy the Saturday simulcast. All are welcome, no previous opera knowledge is needed, and admission is free. For more information, call  374-5515.
