BANGOR, Maine — Eastern Maine Community College has announced a new scholarship program targeted to meet the unique needs of adult students. ‚ÄúBy the year 2018, 59% of all the jobs in Maine will require an associate‚Äôs degree,‚ÄĚ said Lawrence Barrett, EMCC president. ‚ÄúTo be in a position to drive the new economy of Maine, we need to help residents of our communities achieve that increasingly important associate‚Äôs degree. The Fresh Start Scholarship provides such an opportunity.‚ÄĚ The scholarship provides full tuition for two classes for the upcoming 2011-12 academic year for adult students with either a high school diploma or GED, who have been out of high school for five years and have never attended college. In addition to tuition-free classes, through the Fresh Start Scholarship program each participant will meet with a counselor to help them through the college experience. This scholarship opportunity is available for students in the EMCC service area including Penobscot, Piscataquis, Hancock and Waldo counties. Students can take classes in person at the Bangor campus or one of the Off-Campus Centers in Ellsworth, East Millinocket and Dover-Foxcroft. While designated registration/information dates will be held in July and August, prospective students are encouraged to contact EMCC immediately to apply for the scholarship. The application form is available at www.emcc.edu. For more information, call Liz Russell, Associate Dean of Enrollment Management, at 974-4684 or email email@example.com.
