Marine Engineer Training in Rockland

Rockland -

ROCKLAND, Maine — Mid-Coast School of Technology Adult Education has been granted approval by the US Coast Guard to run a training course for marine engineers. Known as a QMED (Qualified Member of the Engine Department), the oiler/fireman/watertender endorsements gained in this course offer opportunities for employment aboard tugboats, ferries and merchant vessels. Completion of this course is an essential step to qualify for an entry level position in an engine room aboard a vessel.

The 145 hour QMED course includes classroom instruction in the basics of electrical theory, diesel engines, boilers, auxiliaries, bearings and lubrication. There will also be hands-on shop training and steam plant and engine room observations. The next three week course will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturdays, beginning  Jan. 30, at Mid-Coast School of Technology.

For mechanically oriented people, this course presents a valuable opportunity to gain maritime employment or upgrade USCG endorsements. Interested applicants can call 596-7752 or email adulted@mcst.tec.me.us for more information.
