BANGOR, Maine –¬† Demand for adult literacy services in the Bangor and Old Town areas is prompting Literacy Volunteers of Bangor (LV-Bangor) to step up efforts to recruit and train volunteer tutors. Volunteers who are patient and understanding are encouraged to learn how they can make an incredible difference by helping to improve another‚Äôs reading skills.

LV-Bangor matches adult students with tutors. Tutoring is done at a time and place that is convenient to both student and tutor. Learners typically identify their goal, whether it is to fill out an application, study for a high school diploma or simply make incremental improvement to overall literacy.

Fifteen (15) hours of training to become certified as a Basic Literacy tutor starts September 12, and runs through to October 24, excluding Columbus Day. The Monday-evening sessions are from 6-9 p.m. at the United Technologies Center, 200 Hogan Road in Bangor.

The course fee is $35. Scholarships are available. For information or to register, call Literacy Volunteers of Bangor at 947-8451 or  email suzannefolsom@lvbangor.org. For more information, visit www.lvbangor.org.
