BANGOR – Included in program Short Cuts A, The 12-minute documentary will screen at the Brick Church in Bangor at 5:45pm on Saturday, August 7th. Jeremy Kaller’s documentary profiles the late Charlie Deal, the San Francisco Bay Area’s rock ’n’ roll dreamer and inventor of the semi-famous toilet-seat guitar. Charlie, often on the fringe of the famous Marin County music scene, became known for his line of unique toilet-seat guitars. Although the long list of Deal Guitar owners includes Jorma Kaukonen and Jerry Garcia, Charlie’s most famous guitar is pictured on the cover of Huey Lewis and News’ classic album, Sports.
A guitarist himself, Charlie led his own band, Charlie’s Gang, Marin County’s longest running rock n roll revue. Over the years, many of Marin’s finest musicians have sat in with Charlie’s Gang and Charlie eventually became known as the “unofficial mayor” of Mill Valley.
While watching the film, one can spot pre-stardom photos of Quicksilver Messenger Service’s John Cipollina and Huey Lewis.
‘The Legend of Toilet-Seat Charlie’ features interviews with Pete Sears of Jefferson Starship, and super-star guitar-tech Larry Cragg, The soundtrack includes tracks from legendary Mill Valley musicians, including Wet Nurse, Charlie’s Gang, Austin De Lone, and Huey Lewis and the News.
‘The Legend of Toilet-Seat Charlie’ premiered at the Mill Valley Film Festival in October 2009. It has also screened at the Connecticut Film Festival and the Marin County Festival of Short Film and video. Jeremy Kaller’s previous documentary short, ‘The Recyclergy’, a humorous profile of Bay Area professional recyclers, won several awards and screened in festivals from New Zealand to Plymouth, Mass.
