BANGOR – Bangor Museum and History Center’s historic Walking Tours of the Mount Hope Cemetery begin Friday, June 4. The tours are held on the first Friday of each month through October 1, and on the third Saturday of each month through September 18th . The Mount Hope Cemetery tour meets at the Cemetery Superintendent’s Office, 1048 State Street. Historic Mount Hope Cemetery is the second oldest garden cemetery in the US. It was designed to meet the mid-19th century city dweller’s desire for a romanticized rural landscape. Many of Maine’s statesmen, military and civic leaders are entombed here, along with some of the infamous characters whose colorful legends still survive.
Tours are $5; museum members and children under 12 free. All are weather permitting. Please call if you are uncertain if the tour will run.
