SURRY, Maine — Surry Elementary is a rural, low income school located in eastern Maine, with 46% of the students at our school on free or reduced lunch. Despite our size, we offer band, choral, and general music options, and students are enthusiastic about participating. However, all of these programs are in need of music and instruments, and our budget is extremely limited. There are a few instruments available for the students, but many are in disrepair or need replacing altogether. Additionally, all levels and ensembles are in need of music, especially the chorus. Music classes are attended by all students in the school, and over half the students in grades four and above participate in at least one ensemble. Our music department is interdisciplinary, with students incorporating foreign languages, math, and history in the classroom. Music is an important subject, and while it is widely supported by staff, parents, and the community it is extremely underfunded. Please help us win up to $50,000 in The Clorox Company‚Äôs Power A Bright Future grant program!
