FAIRFIELD – The L.C. Bates Museum will be hosting a series of workshops in which children will discover the history of Maine through hands-on experiences with toys, clothes, tools, and old fashioned school objects. These Learning About the Past programs will be at 1 PM on Wednesdays, from July 7 to July 28. Each program will be different. July 7th participants will explore school in the early 1900”s by trying authentic slate boards, slate pencils, and feather pens. On July 14th children will play with old time toys like the hoop and stick, graces, and make their own old fashioned toy to bring home. On the 21st of July participants will use old time tools and discover what chores children would have done on the farm or at home. Children will make paper dolls to take home. Lastly, on July 28th families can try their hand at setting type on a printing and letter press. Each person will uncover why the expression “mind your p’s and q’s” came into existence. In each program children will step back into the early 1900’s by trying on clothes that boys and girls wore and learning about the daily lives of children. The program cost is included in the cost of museum admission.
