GREENVILLE, Maine — I write as both the chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Shaw Public Library in Greenville as well as the President of the Shaw Public Library Association – a 501(c)(3) established as the fund raising group for the Library.
During a strategic planning process in 2009, the most pressing need of the Library was for more space. Since the Library was constructed in 1936, demand for services has steadily increased; but, the Library has decreased in usable space. The basement became unusable after repeated flooding and the recognition that the ceiling was too low to meet current code requirements.
Over a 3 year period, the Library Association privately raised sufficient money to purchase the building adjacent to the Library (the oldest home in the village) and renovating it to be used as an annex to the existing building. The Association has now leased the building to the Town for 99 years at the cost of $1.
