Bar Harbor -

MOUNT DESERT ISLAND, Maine — Free copies of “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer” by Mark Twain are available starting Thursday, Jan. 5, at the Jesup Memorial Library in Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor Public Library, Somesville library, Northeast Harbor Library, Stonington library and Bass Harbor Memorial Library for participants of The Big Read.
Jan Coates, executive director of Island Readers and Writers which is spearheading the program on Mount Desert Island, said the group is aiming to have at least 1,500 people participate.
“We want you to join us!” she said. “We’ve got an exciting lineup of events surrounding the reading of ‘The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.’”
The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. MDI-based nonprofit Island Readers & Writers is the only recipient of an NEA grant for The Big Read in Maine, and one of only five recipients in all of New England. A series of events including theater, art exhibits, music, dancing, films and book discussions are scheduled as part of The Big Read.
