Embalming and Edgar Allen Poe for Halloween

Bangor -

BANGOR – The Bangor Museum and History Center is hosting a Victorian funeral practice and spooky reading program in collaboration with Bangor Arts at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 29-30. Admission is $10.00. Seating is limited and reservations are required. Please call 942-1900 or email curator@bangormuseum.org with your name, number attending and phone/cell number.

The evening program will begin with an exhibit of antique funeral objects loaned by Brookings Smith Funeral Home and Jordan-Fernald Funeral Homes along with a presentation about Victorian funeral practices and early embalming techniques. Next, Ben Layman, Penobscot Theatre Company, will present a dramatic reading of Edgar Allen Poe’s short horror story, “The Premature Burial.”

Many believe that Samuel H. Dale, former owner, haunts the Thomas A. Hill house. Dale died in his home in late 1871 under a cloud of suspicion about missing funds that were intended for the victims of Chicago’s Great fire. His death was thought to be a suicide.
