Elks’ national president to visit Augusta Nov. 8

Augusta -

AUGUSTA, Maine — The Grand Exalted Ruler (national president) of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and his spouse will be honored at the Augusta Elks Lodge on Tuesday, Nov. 8.
David R. Carr and First Lady Penny Carr of Crown Point, N.Y. will attend a banquet at 7 p.m. and share his thoughts and goals for the fraternal organization afterwards.
Nearly all of the exalted rulers (presidents) of Maine’s 22 Elks Lodges are expected to attend, but the banquet is also open to all Elks members and invited guests.
Carr, who is retired from International Paper Company, was elected at the Elks National Convention in Phoenix, Ariz. earlier this year and will serve a one-year term. He has been an Elks member for 36 years and belongs to the Ticonderoga (N.Y.) Lodge.
Among his achievements are service as his lodge’s exalted ruler, trustee and public relations chair, New York State Elks Association Community Activities chair, secretary and president; and a member of the Grand Lodge (national) Board of Trustees from 2006-2010.
The Elks, founded in 1868, currently has just under 1 million members in 2,000 lodges across the country. There are approximately 11,200 members in Maine.
Numerous charitable programs are supported by the Grand Lodge in addition to major projects undertaken by state organizations and local lodges.
In Maine, the major project is the Maine Children’s Cancer Program where close to $3 million has been donated since 1985. A subsidiary of Maine Medical Center, the program is linked to research centers throughout the country and beyond so that patients can be treated close to home.
The Maine Elks Association has also operated a free mobile health screening van since 1977.
