MILBRIDGE, Maine – The Women’s Health Resource Library has announced the 2011 recipients of two $2500 nursing scholarships.
Narraguagus High School senior Brittany Burke is the winner in the high school division. Brittany will be attending Husson University in the fall. Brittany is the daughter of Chris and Julie Burke of Addison. While at NHS, Brittany was a member of National Honor Society, Student Government, played three varsity sports and volunteered for the EdGe after school program.
In the non-traditional student category, the winner is Joanne Hicks of East Machias. Joanne will be attending the Central Maine Medical Center nursing program. Joanne, who always wanted to be a nurse, put her career goals on hold after starting a family. She has worked as a CNA since 1980 and is now ready to complete her education.
The scholarships are given in memory of the late Elaine Hill, a Milbridge resident and nurse at the Milbridge Medical Center for over 30 years. Elaine lost her battle with breast cancer in February 2009.
A selection committee, including Elaine’s daughter Carol Hill Zimmerman, judged the applicants based on essay content, grades and personal recommendations.
Funds for the scholarship come from the annual Elaine Hill Memorial Walk, held each October during Breast cancer Awareness month, and from donations. For more information, go to whrl.org.
