ROCKPORT – The Country Inn in Rockport is featuring photographs of Maine wild flowers and local wildlife including: seals, osprey, loons, mourning doves and gulls in their lobby gallery during the months of July and August. The exhibit is the work of Jan Gilley, a Camden resident and a 2009 winner of four prizes in the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce Photography Contest. Gilley is a retired school administrator who began studying photography in Connecticut and later studied at the Maine Media Workshops with many well known photographers, especially Alison Shaw of Martha‚Äôs Vineyard; Sarah Leen, Senior Photo Editor for National Geographic; and Andrea Modica, nationally known portrait artist and photography professor at Drexel University. Although Gilley loves working with medium format black and white film, she believes that ‚Äúphotographing Maine natural life requires color to capture its spirit.‚ÄĚ Gilley‚Äôs exhibit at the Country Inn in Rockport also includes a four-foot mixed media mural ‚ÄúAutumn Rockport Harbor Moonrise‚ÄĚ, which is a composite of several photographs taken last fall, as well as ‚ÄúFlags – Spirit of Bermuda‚ÄĚ taken on launching day of that schooner in Rockport Harbor, August of 2006. Most of the photographs are on canvas and mounted as gallery prints. An artist‚Äôs reception, open to the public, will be held from 4-7pm on July 23rd in the Country Inn lobby.
