BANGOR – Bangor Phianthropic group celebrates their 75th year.¬† Chapter A , P.E.O. Sisterhood, Bangor. P.E.O., the Philanthropic Educational Organization, was established in 1869, placing it among the oldest women‚Äôs organizations in North America. Originally begun as a friendship society at Iowa Wesleyan College, Mount Pleasant, Iowa, P.E.O. has evolved into one of the largest nonsectarian, community based organizations with nearly 6,000 chapters and nearly 250,000 members. P.E.O. has chapters in each of the 50 United States, District of Columbia and in six Canadian provinces. Its headquarters are in Des Moines, Iowa.
The organization expanded to the national level to promote educational opportunities for young women. Groups were formed to pursue this common goal. There are eleven chapters in Maine: Two in Bangor, Ellsworth, Belfast, Camden, Rockland, Brunswick, Harpswell, Kennebunk, Portland and Kittery.
