BREWER – Brewer’s Washington Street School teacher, Cherrie MacInnes and her third grade students accepted a reading challenge that would help support adult literacy. Each of Mrs. MacInnes’ 23 students read for 100 minutes. In recognition of their efforts, MacInnes Optical, a local business, donated $100 to Literacy Volunteers of Bangor (LV-Bangor).
Prior to the assignment, the third graders learned that some adults struggle with reading–a subject these children are learning to master every day they attend school. “Once the students realized that the reading challenge would result in a $100 donation to LV-Bangor, they took the assignment so seriously,” explained Mrs. MacInnes.
