NEWPORT - Boy Scouts and leaders from Troop 63 in Newport will set up camp on the lawn in front of Bud’s Shop and Save in Newport at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 12 to collect non-perishable food items. The event is part of the Boy Scouts of America’s annual Scouting for Food program, a yearly food drive that collects millions of pounds of food for food pantries and soup kitchens nationwide. Donations from the Newport drive will go to the Newport Community Food Bank, which serves Dixmont, Etna, Plymouth, Palmyra and Newport.
To meet this goal, the scouts will spend the night in their tents in front of the grocery store. “There are a lot of times when we go door to door that people aren’t home, because they’re out shopping. This gives people an opportunity to come to us throughout the day at their convenience,” said Potvin.
During the day, Troop 63 will be assisted by boys and leaders from Cub Scout Pack 63 of Newport.
Any non-perishable food item will be accepted. Donations may be dropped off at the trailer in front of Bud’s Shop and Save until 4 p.m. Nov. 13. For information, e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
