NEWPORT, Maine — The Boy Scouts of Troop 63 in Newport are pitching their tents on the lawn of Bud’s Shop & Save from noon Friday, Nov. 11, until noon Sunday, Nov. 13, to do their good turn. They will spend the weekend collecting non-perishable food items to be donated to the Newport Community Food Bank which serves Newport, Palmyra, Etna, Dixmont and Plymouth.
Last year they camped for one night and collected over 1,500 pounds of food and $800 in cash for the food bank. This year they hope to surpass that amount.
The State Police will weigh the scout’s empty troop trailer on Friday and return on Sunday to weigh it again and determine how many pounds of food the scouts collected.
In honor of Veterans Day, the Scouts in conjunction with American Legion Post 105 will hold a flag retirement ceremony at their campsite at 9 p.m. on Nov. 11. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.
On Saturday, Nov. 12, a Native American volunteer will demonstrate the creation of a drum in the traditional manner.
Troop 63 of Newport has 29 registered boy scouts, five leaders and a committee of twelve. The troop is a part of Penquis District and the Katahdin Area Council.
