BLUE HILL, Maine — Starting on Saturday, Sept. 10, Saturday Stories will be morphing into The “Chickadee Club” for kids aged five to ten years old and featuring one or more books each month that are in the running for the Chickadee Award: A Maine Children’s Choice Picture Book Project. The Chickadee Award is given annually to a picture book published the previous year. Maine schoolchildren vote to determine the winner from a group of ten books nominated by a committee of teachers, librarians, and early literacy professionals. The goal of the program is for children to develop an appreciation for outstanding writing and illustration. The Blue Hill Library’s Chickadee Club will be involved in helping to choose this year’s winner.
On September 10th Pat Horton will read the first of the nominated stories, Goal! written by Mina Javaherbin and illustrated by A. G. Ford. The story takes place in South Africa and illustrates the unifying power of soccer, a tribute to the world’s most popular sport. On following Saturdays in September, related books and activities will be the focus. Then in October they will move on to another one of the nominated books. When March rolls around the kids will get to vote for their favorite book and help select this year’s Chickadee Award winner.
