Belfast Free Library Appeal to Public

Belfast, Maine -

BELFAST – The Belfast Free Library has announced the start of its Annual Appeal. Monetary contributions of any size will be gratefully accepted as the library makes plans for the upcoming year.

The library was founded in 1887, after significant donations by local businessman Paul Hazeltine and Belfast native Nathanial Wilson made the construction of the original building and initial operations possible. Since then the library, a department of the City
of Belfast, has relied on and enjoyed generous community support to enhance this thriving, important resource for residents of Belfast and the surrounding area.

Past projects supported, in part, by the Annual Appeal have included the acquisition of video projection equipment in the Abbott Room, security gates by the door to the back garden, new books when the book purchase budget was low, repair and replacement of the roof, updating electrical wiring, and the restoration and renovation of the original historic section of the library. The intention for a portion of this year’s annual appeal funds is to upgrade the public computers (which have enjoyed a 557% increase in usage since 2000) to ensure they are in good working condition and more convenient for the public to use.

Over the last 10 years library visits have increased almost threefold, with nearly a doubling in the number of library cardholders. The library has put significant effort into increasing programs for children and adults, concerts, and monthly art displays. “The Annual Appeal is essential to the operations of the library and supports what I would call the margin of excellence in library services, ” says Library Director, Steve Norman, “We are very grateful for the support and for contributions of any size to help us continue to bring these services to the people of our community.” The Belfast Free Library is a 501C3, non-profit organization, and your donation is tax deductible.
