BANGOR, Maine — The next Downtown Bangor Artwalk will be held from 5-9 p.m. Friday Aug. 12, in Bangor. This free open studio tour draws large crowds to meet local artists and to celebrate downtown Bangor as a destination. Meet up with your friends or family, enjoy a meal at a downtown restaurant, and explore the many cultural resources the city has to offer. The August event provides several interactive venues that will expand your art-loving sensibilities.

A great place to start is on the hill at 170 Park Street where galleries One Lupine and This Handmade Life feature handmade works from local and Maine artisans. If you are a fiber enthusiast, be sure to visit the studio at One Lupine where Jodi Clayton produces fine silk and wool apparel and you can find her working on either a felting or spinning demonstration.

The Ellsworth Rock and Art Shop and Sohns Gallery located at 36 Central Street hosts Fast Food Prints: Art to Order From, an accessible, interactive screen printing project by a collective of Maine College of Art students.

Be sure to visit Photo National 2011: A Survey of Contemporary Photography at the University of Maine Museum of Art, and just around the corner is “Fire!” – a centennial exhibit about the Great Bangor Fire of 1911 hosted by the Bangor Museum and History Center. In the adjunct gallery will be works by sculptor Randy Colbath and painter Linda Packard.

At the Charles Inn check out the video projection piece multi-media artist Brian Monahan has worked on. His more traditional works will also be featured in the first floor gallery.

The August Artwalk precedes music on the waterfront that is part of the 2011 KahBang Music and Arts Festival. Emerging artists will be showcased by KahBang at the downtown Kaleidoscope gallery at one Merchant Plaza in the center of Downtown Bangor. The diverse body of work features sculpture, photography, painting, installation, performance and video. A sculpture park at the Bangor Waterfront also curated by KahBang will be open for the weekend of August 12th. For more information visit: http://www.kahbangarts.org/

This is just a taste of all the artists that will be showing off their work for the evening. Artwalk maps listing the participating venues and featured artists can be found at The University of Maine Museum of Art, Metropolitan Soul, Blue Heron, The Rock and Art Shop and One Lupine Fiber Arts.
