ELLSWORTH, Maine –Â Steve Abrahams, Chess Coach of John Bapst High School and Orono High School in Bangor and Orono respectively is scheduled to play up to 30 chess players at the same time on Feb. 13,Â at Ellsworth Middle School.Â The event will take place from 3:30 to 5 p.m. in the school cafeteria.
Steve is currently ranked number 7 in the State with a United State Chess Federation Rating of 1947, which puts him in the 94th percentile nationally. Steve has competed around the country in two World Open events, 1 US Open, and also competed in the 2006 National High School Invitational (Denker) Tournament after winning the 2006 New Hampshire High School Championship.
Steve will attempt to break his own record, having last year playing over 30 games against 20 opponents at once. In that event Steve managed to lose only one game to Paul Wlodkowski, a professor at Maine Maritime.
Steve is Currently a Senior at the New England School of Communications in Bangor studying Marketing Communications. After the event Steve is off to New Jersey to compete with Boston University in the World Amateur Team Championship in New Jersey. Steve has been playing competitive chess for over 10 years. When heâ€™s not playing chess heâ€™s enjoying spending time with his Fiance, Julie, and being a normal college student.
