Abbot Plans Dedication

Abbot -

ABBOT, Maine — Everyone is invited to put Abbot on their calendars on November 11, 2011. That is the date the new Veteran’s Honor Roll will be dedicated. After several years of planning and designing, the new Veterans’s Honor Roll is being made. The new Honor Roll is a large piece of beautifully polished black granite with all of Abbot’s patriots being engraved on it. The ceremony will take place at the site of the present honor roll and the monument at 2pm. A military band, several of our state’s representatives and many area Legions have been invited and are planning to be there.
The Town Hall will open at 10am and will be the location of the reception to follow the dedication ceremony. There will be special exhibits depicting Abbot’s military history. Abbot’s postmistress will hold a special two hour period from 10am to noon to post mark your mail with the specially designed First Day Cover postmark honoring the special day – 11-11-11. The Honor Roll committee has designed a commemorative coin featuring the three honor rolls and the monument. The coin will be available for purchase. Orders are being taken now at the Town Office. The cost is $15.
Many activities and many folks have been involved with the project. The second annual Green Bridge 5K Run/Walk was held in September with four runners, fourteen walkers and one beagle taking part. John Blodgett was the overall winner and also the winner for his age 60+ age group. Shirley Adams was the top female winner, with Greta Farmer coming in close behind. Ron Fountain won in his 50-59 age group.
The Flag drawing was given to Allyson Holmbom of Bar Harbor. Allyson is the granddaughter of Korean War Veteran Merton W. Carr. Elaine Roberts and Joann Bennett were both winners of drawings and they both turned their prizes back to benefit the project. Tickets for the next quilt drawing are available at the Town Office and the drawing will be held during our Veterans’ Day activities.
The committee, consisting of Jan Ronco, Chairman, Cheri Wentworth, Lorraine Leeman, Wayne Bennett, Vic Morin, Gary Nelson, Bill and Carolyn Amos, appreciates all the help and cooperation from everyone, near and far. They sincerely hope everyone will help Abbot celebrate on 11-11-11.
