BANGOR, Maine — Telford and Karen Allen of Hampden are pleased to announce that applications are now available for their annual “gift of health” scholarship. The scholarship is intended to enable a deserving local youngster to receive a full year’s membership at Union Street Athletics, including weekly personal training sessions with Louie Morrison. The Allen’s were motivated to establish the “Gift of Health” program by the visible impact of regular workouts upon the health of their two sons, both of whom have been coached weekly by trainers Louie Morrison and Tom Constantine. “Their participation in the gym made them appreciate the importance of physical exercise to their health and it also gave them a tremendous boost in self-confidence” says Telford Allen III, adding that “The results of their regular exercise made us wish that more kids could enjoy the same benefits. By starting this program we hope we can positively influence the life of at least one other boy or girl each year and start a trend in sponsored exercise programs for kids.”
The program is designed for boys and girls between 10 and 17 years of age who live within the greater Bangor area. The award process involves an application and brief essay and the applicant deemed most deserving will be selected by a small, independent board made up of USA management and trainers who will also oversee the scholarship fund.
Cody Savage of Bangor High School was selected as the first annual recipient of the Allen Family “Gift of Health” scholarship. He has been training with Morrison now for 8 months. When asked what the “gift of health” award he received has done so far for him, Cody replied, “the Gift of Health award has really shown me the meaning of being fit. I am now mentally tough enough to take on any challenge in the gym that is thrown at me. I know what it will take to reach my ultimate goal. With a positive attitude and understanding of different workouts, I feel that anyone can be healthy.”
Applications can be picked up at Union Street Athletics, located at 366 Griffin Road in Bangor. The 2012 application deadline is Dec. 15, and a winner will be announced on Jan. 1.
