New & Exciting Educational Choice for TEENS

Bangor -

BANGOR – An informational forum will be held at the Bangor Public Library from 5:30 to 7:00pm on Tuesday, June 29th,  for parents, students, and interested community members who want to learn more about an exciting, innovative educational opportunity that is slated to open in Maine this September. This forum is one of several occurring throughout Maine during the next month to present MASA’s programming offerings, open discussion about local public education, and elicit community support before the exact location of MASA is selected.

Maine Arts & Sports Academy (MASA) pivots students around the reality that they are team members of their school, community and Earth. MASA uses the arts, sports, apprenticeships, service-learning opportunities, and environmental education through which students explore their interests, develop their talents, strengthen their creative & athletic abilities, and engage in collaborative efforts with other youths & adults. MASA believes that education necessarily means a melding of school with community; thus, MASA not only declares a share in the responsibility for youths’ individual, moral, civic and global education, but facilitates the processes.

Safford’s background includes over 30 years in the field of education, working & playing & sharing with kids of all ages in myriad settings: a 300 acre ranch school for court adjudicated boys in Boonville, California; an eating disorder clinic at the University of Michigan; an alternative high school in Auburndale, Michigan; an inner city charter school in Detroit, Michigan; her Rockland, Maine home working with home-schooled youths; teen parents’ homes in coastal Maine; two island schools off the coast of Maine, and, believe it or not, more. She is a certified principal in three states, including Maine; ESL Instructor; LPN, lay-midwife; and, most importantly, the mother of four sons.
