Water Activities At Camp Rainbow

ELLSWORTH -  The American Cancer Society’s Camp Rainbow is a place where kids who have cancer can join in dozens of fun activities, meet other kids and families, and feel more confident about themselves. This year the weeklong camping experience, offered free of charge, takes place June 27 through July 3 at Camp Jordan on Branch Lake in Ellsworth.

Camp Rainbow is celebrating its 23rd year at Camp Jordan! Since 1987 the traditional softball, swimming, s’mores, and other summertime activities have taken place. This year’s camp theme is Magic. Campers are encouraged to bring a magic wand, cape, top hat or sorcerer’s hat, or a Harry Potter costume to help show their spirit.

Children currently in treatment for cancer as well as those who are up to 10 years post-treatment are eligible. Children ages 4 to 6 may attend with a parent or guardian; those 7 and older may attend alone; parents and siblings are also invited.

When asked what they liked most about Camp Rainbow, many participants remarked that they like how everyone cares about everyone else and how they were able to share their thoughts with others who have experienced cancer. When asked what they like least about camp, the general consensus was, “It wasn’t long enough!”

Thanks to financial contributions from the American Cancer Society’s many friends and donors, participants are able to attend Camp Rainbow free of charge. Donations are always needed and are gratefully accepted. For more information and an application for Camp Rainbow, please contact the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345 or www.cancer.org.
