BRUNSWICK -The American Cancer Society is pleased to announce that the Relay For Life of Bowdoin College has been named the top fund-raising college/university in Maine. The award was presented to Co-Chairs, Phil Tonucci of Hingham, MA and Randy DeFeo of Ridgewood, NJ. The event kicked off its 5th annual Relay on Friday, April 16 at the Farley Field House with 53 teams and raised $59,000.
Relay For Life brought together the entire Bowdoin community – students, educators, and staff – to draw attention to the progress being made in the fight against cancer. Many participants have either faced cancer themselves or have a family member or friend touched by the disease.
“Relay For Life reminds us how effective we can be when we unite behind a common goal,” said Donna Muto, Community Executive for the American Cancer Society in Maine. “We, at the American Cancer Society, know we aren’t in this alone. Our efforts are multiplied many times by the hundreds of volunteers’ hours and extraordinary fundraising efforts put forth by the Relay planning committee, students, and staff at Bowdoin College.”
Other college/university events in Maine during April and May were held at UMaine Farmington, UMaine Orono, University of New England, USM, and Colby College. The Relay For Life of Waterville, a combined community/college event is scheduled for October 22 & 23, 2010.
