HANCOCK – Dr. Peter Cummings and the team at Hancock Dental are sponsoring a Zumba fundraiser for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention at 5:30pm on Thursday, September 16th at the Downeast Family YMCA with Robin Clarke as the trainer for the session.
AFSP was founded in 1987 and is the leading national not-for-profit organization exclusively dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide through research, education and advocacy. AFSP also reaches out to people with mental disorders and those impacted by suicide. (For more information on this organization, go to www.afsp.org)
Over 34,000 people in the United States die by suicide every year. Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death for adults between the ages of 18 and 65 years in the United States (28,628 suicides). Currently, suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the United States. A person dies by suicide about every 15 minutes in the United States. An attempt is estimated to be made once every minute.
Dr. Cummings and his family have participated in the “Out of the Darkness Community Walks” to benefit the AFSP for the past four years. This year, Dr. Cummings wanted to do more to raise awareness of suicide statistics and what can be done to help prevent suicide as well as to raise more money for the AFSP.
Admission to this event is $5.00 per person and an extra $5.00 gets you a spot on stage with Robin for your favorite Zumba song (first come-first served). If you are unable to attend the event but would like to make a donation, you can mail your donation to Hancock Dental at 201 High Street, Ellsworth, ME 04605 – checks should be made payable to American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
