World Elder Abuse Awareness Day

Bangor -

BANGOR – Rosscare brings attention to a largely under-recognized problem by raising awareness for The International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse’s fifth annual World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) on Tuesday, June 15, 2010.

Elder abuse is a continued problem and no country or community is immune. According to Washington DC’s National Research Council Panel to Review and Prevalence of Elder Abuse and Neglect, between one and two million Americans age 65 or older have been injured, exploited or otherwise mistreated by someone on whom they depend on for care or protection.

The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is in support of the United Nations International Plan of Action, which recognizes the significance of elder abuse as a public health and human rights issue. Events were first held in 2006 and involved several hundred communities in every continent around the world. Today it is still held internationally to bring awareness of elder abuse across the globe.

Countries, communities, neighborhoods, and organizations are encouraged to help bring awareness of this issue by getting involved. Thinking of your parents, grandparents, or senior loved ones, Rosscare urges everyone to spark an awareness of elder abuse in their community, hoping that people will promote a better understanding of abuse and neglect of older adults. To find out more on how you can help or be involved go to www.inpea.net/weaad.html. Raising awareness of elder abuse and neglect is a challenge and no effort is too small.
