ELLSWORTH, Maine — Maine Coast Memorial Hospital’s Infant Family Support Program (IFSP) has received a grant from the Maine Community Foundation’s Washington County Fund. This grant will enable the IFSP to expand its services to the Eleanor Widener Dixon Memorial Clinic in Gouldsboro.
In 2005, the Hancock County Infant Mental Health Coalition was formed by Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Downeast Health Services, Special Children’s Friends, Child and Family Opportunities, Hancock County Children’s Council, and the Maine Association for Infant Mental Health. Open to all community members who are interested in the healthy growth and development of infants and young children, the Coalition pools resources to maximize the emotional, physical, social, and cognitive well-being of children ages 0-3 and their caregivers.
The Infant Family Support Program, based on the Healthy StepsSM Program model, is the first program initiated by the Coalition. Ensuring that infant mental health and development are a priority equal to physical well being, the IFSP operates within the Maine Coast Memorial Hospital Pediatrics office. More than 250 area families are benefitting from the IFSP services such as post-partum depression screening and guidance on a range of infant and family health issues including parent-child bonding, sleep training, and excessive crying.
Dr. Sheena Whittaker, Maine Coast Memorial Hospital pediatrician, supervises the Infant Family Support Program. “This Program offers a standard of care that I believe should be advanced in this region,” she said. “I am thrilled that the Maine Community Foundation funded our grant to bring this program to the Gouldsboro Clinic. We will be able to increase the number of families we serve, and for our current patients who live further Downeast, the Gouldsboro Clinic location will be much more convenient.”
