Belfast Middle School Beekeeping Service

Belfast -

BELFAST -  Gold Star Honeybees’ Beekeeping Service, owner Christy Hemenway now maintains a top bar beehive at  The Troy Howard Middle School. Viewed by many as the premier Maine school garden project. In addition, Hemenway provides classes on natural beekeeping – helping students to make the important connection between growing food, pollination, good nutrition, and environmental awareness.
“We are thrilled to add Troy Howard Middle School as a client”. Troy Howard M.S. joins Bath’s RSU #1 in this exciting educational school garden program” reports Hemenway. Her hope is to add top bar hive services to school gardens throughout Maine in 2011. Sources of funding are being sought to do just that.
Mr. Thurston, Agricultural Coordinator for MSAD #34 in Belfast, stated “Kids love the bees! They really get it!” The Gold Star Top Bar Hive includes an observation window which fascinates the kids as it allows them to watch the bees at work inside the hive. In just one week, the bees have already created a significant amount of honeycomb, reports Thurston.
Top bar hives differ from conventional beehives in that the bees make their own clean, natural beeswax. This supports the bees’ natural behaviors and helps us keep healthy bees.
