LOCAL BUSINESS WOMAN INVITED TO WASHINGTON, DC

South Thomaston, ME -

SOUTH THOMASTON – Joanne Miller, LSW, CMC, CSA, Administrator of ASK…for Home Care and Homeshare, Inc., has been invited to sit on the National Advisory Board for Tapping Mature Talent(TMT), a partnership between the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning(CAEL) and the Council on Competitiveness(CoC). In 2009, the U.S. Department of Labor selected ten sites from across the country to receive funding and participate in the department’s Aging Worker Initiative (AWI). Over a three year period, the AWI grantees are developing strategies
and programs to make the mature workforce an effective asset for their local and/or state economies. Maine was one of the 10 States to be awarded these million dollar grants.
The Coastal Counties Workforce Development Board, on which Ms. Miller has sat for some years, was awarded the grant in part due to the efforts of Dave Tomm, who runs the Seasoned Worker forums at the Career Center in Rockland and throughout the State. Ms. Miller has often spoken at these forums and has been awarded the Silver Collar Award for her employment of seasoned workers.

The meeting in Washington, DC was attended by many distinguished participants including representatives from Temple University, AFL-CIO, National Council on Aging, John Hopkins Health System, American Council on Education, The Center on Aging and Work, AARP, National Governors Association, U.S Administration on Aging, and, as a voice for employers, ASK…for Home Care. Topics for the meeting included:
• Accomplishments, Progress and Lessons Learned
• Mature Worker Job Placement
• Mapping Policy and Shaping the National Debate
• Accelerating Private Sector Employment of Mature Workers

This appointment culminates a life long commitment to the development of Maine’s human resources. Ms. Miller served on Governor McKernan’s Human Resource Development Council, where she was instrumental in shaping policy. She continued her work on the Coastal Counties Workforce Development Board. TMT Board membership will take her efforts to the national stage.
