Greater Portland Area -

World-Renowned A Cappella Conductor & Musician Coming to Maine May 22nd and 23rd

World renowned shape note/a cappella musician, John Bell of the Iona Community in Scotland, will be in Maine to lead workshops Saturday and Sunday, May 22nd and 23rd. A major force for change in the music of mainstream Christianity world-wide, he will be sharing his love of world music and his belief in participatory song in the engaging, powerful style he is justly famous for.

Saturday May 22, from 2:00pm to 5:00pm, Bell will lead a workshop on “Encouraging Congregational Singing” at the North Windham Union Church, 723 Roosevelt Trail (Rte. 302), in Windham. This event is open to all who are interested, but pre-registration is necessary, and there is a small fee ($10.00). Registration for this workshop will close on Wednesday, May 19th.

Sunday morning May 23, at 10:00am, Bell will preach and lead worship at the Raymond Village Community Church (UCC), 27 Main Street, in Raymond. This service is open to all, and no pre-registration is required.

Sunday afternoon, May 23, Bell will conduct a “Big Sing” at the First Congregational Church, 301 Cottage Road, South Portland. This event is also open to all. Pre-registration is requested, but walk-ins will be accommodated. To help defray the costs of bringing him to Maine, an admission fee of $7.00 is being charged.

To register for the Workshop and the Big Sing, or for more information, go to: http://johnbellinmaine.blogspot.com/, or contact Rev. Nancy Foran at 207-650-7845.

“Watching John Bell take a room full of people – many of whom think they can’t sing – and get them to produce beautiful 4-part harmonies is an amazing experience.”, said the Reverend Nancy Foran, Pastor of the Raymond Village Church and principal organizer of the event.

“John Bell is a frequent key note speaker and song leader at events attended by thousands of people, such as the Festival of Homiletics and the Assembly of the World Council of Churches. His workshops in Maine are a unique opportunity to interact with a world class musician in an intimate setting.”, said Foran.

John Bell is a prolific and influential writer of new sacred music. A member of Scotland’s famous Iona Community, Bell is a classically-trained musician, an occasional commentator on the BBC, and author of over 20 books, the most recent being Ten Things They Never Told Me About Jesus: A Beginner’s Guide To a Larger Christ.

The weekend’s events are being sponsored by a group of United Church of Christ churches in the Greater Portland area, assisted by a Resourcing the Local Church grant from the Maine Conference, UCC.
