MACHIAS, Maine — Meet Alexander Kode Foster, 19, from Machias, Maine. Local residents may think of him as a dreamer, an idealist, a romantic, or even a visionary. Growing up in a small rural community, he has nurtured a certain closeness with the Earth, it’s inhabitants, and the wisdom it all inherently whispers. Quietly shifting through adolescence it was not uncommon for teachers, peers, and mentors to take specific notice to the young man already enriching and impressing upon their lives. Stories are told about the 13 year old boy reading the philosophies of Nietzsche, a 16 year old being referred to by a librarian as “the most advanced reader” she’s ever seen, or the 18 year old spending entire seasons locked in his room with the hundreds of books he has collected over the years.
That Spring what emerged from his room, and those formative years, is a man with an epiphanic designation to convey love, hope, and change to not only his own community – but the global community. With calculated discernment, and a few encounters with the luck of chance, Alex knew exactly what he needed to do: Build a solar powered trike, travel the entire country, capture on film interviews with notable public figures and every day Americans – and help change the world, one person at a time.
After months of inflexible perseverance, long days, and the blood, sweat, and tears of himself and his supporters – the light at the end of the tunnel is near. Alex is set to depart during the month of September from Eastport, Maine and ending in Neah Bay, Washington during the month of December. It will be a long bumpy ride, and surely one to test his tenacity. Though anyone challenging Alex’s conviction knows his answer is that the force behind this trek extends far beyond the parallels of one man’s will. It is the deposition of millions of silent voices wishing for change in an era of hopelessness. For if there is anything that young Alex learned early on, it was that yes, he may be a dreamer. But he is not the only one.
